In the series of battles of the Great Aylul Revolution between the Kurdistan Peshmerga Forces and the Iraqi Army, on June 25, 1965, in the Chwarta region and Azmar Mountain, which belongs to Sulaymaniyah Governorate, a major battle took place between the Iraqi Army and the Peshmerga Forces. Chwarta was an important and strategic district center for the Peshmerga Forces.
PreparationsThe army, with the intention of capturing the area and pursuing the Peshmerga Forces, on June 25, 1965, with the participation of the Fifth Brigade and the Twentieth Brigade, in an opportunity where the Peshmerga Forces were not expecting such an attack, they attacked Azmar Mountain. The battle was very fierce and bloody, lasting one day. The Iraqi Army was able to defeat the Peshmerga Forces and occupy the entire Azmar Mountain and the Chwarta region.
That victory of the Iraqi Army was the result of the lack of resistance by the Peshmerga Forces in the area. Compared to the battles in other places, the Peshmerga Forces did not offer significant resistance. That victory of the Iraqi Army had a great impact on the collapse of the morale of the people in general and the Peshmerga in particular. In return, the Iraqi Army became arrogant with that victory they achieved in that battle.
